Best Of
  • 1
Access to the best professors and minds of our time
  • 2
The student motivation and ambition on campus is contagious.
  • 3
The opportunity to pursue literally any interest you might have
  • 4
Alumni are eager to help undergraduates find jobs and internships.
  • 5
The city of Boston provides the perfect backdrop for college social life.
  • 6
Harvard housing is among the best in the nationâyou'll realize how important this really is once you are there.
  • 7
The Harvard Library system is the largest university library in the world, so any book you need will be available, and you won't have to go searching for it at other universities.
  • 8
The diversity of Harvard means that you will be exposed to opinions and ways of life you may never have been exposed to otherwise.
  • 9
Classes feature state-of the art technology, producing a class experience that is rivaled by few other universities in the world.
  • 10
It's Harvard, and whether you like it or not, it garners respect from friends, family, and employers alike.
Worst Of
  • 1
People often focus too much on future careers and making money, and sometimes lose track of enjoying the present.
  • 2
Professors are brilliant, but tracking them down for a one-on-one conversation requires a degree of patience.
  • 3
Classes are difficult, and it is impossible to do all of the work for a given class, so you must choose wisely when deciding how to structure work time.
  • 4
During exam period, people lose track of time, miss meals, and forget whether they went to sleep at 3 a.m. or 3 p.m. In general, it's a 10-day twilight zone.
  • 5
Did I mention the weather? When you don't see the sun for days at a time, it can be a bit disturbing.
  • 6
Liquor laws in Massachusetts are tough, and bars are 21 and older, so developing a full social life that involves drinking can be difficult if you don't have a fake ID or have friends who do.
  • 7
You get to hear all of your friends' crazy stories from their schools and often don't have anything that comes close to matching their college exploits.
  • 8
Even though you beat the odds by getting accepted, rejection still runs rampant through student organizations.
  • 9
The New England winters really dampen students' spirits and make the morning sleepwalk to class an even larger ordeal.
  • 10
It's Harvard, and along with its prestige comes a certain level of disdain from non-Harvard students, who think everyone at Harvard is an arrogant jerk and will be happy to let you know just how they feel.

  • Tips for Getting In
    • Be unique, curious, humble, interesting.
    • Do something extraordinary!
    • Don't lie.
    • Excel in school, achieve extremely high scores on admissions tests
    • Get recommendations from unique and respectable people.
    • Have a great attendance rate.
    • Participate in clubs and community service.
    • Write substantive essays.
    • Don't be scared away from Harvard because you think you won't be smart enough or because you think the classes will be too difficult. Practically all Harvard students think it's tough and think everyone else is smarter than they are. The College offers plenty of study groups and tutoring services, so even if you're struggling, there is a place to turn.
    • Even though Cambridge is the quintessential town for college students, it is extremely expensive.
    • Freshman week (aka "Camp Harvard") is amazingâdon't be shy because everyone is new to the school, just like you.
    • Harvard is not completely made up of rich, snobby kids who got in because of their parents' alumni status. Instead, Harvard students are diverse in every way, and no matter who you are, you will find people similar to you.
    • If you are not from a place where it snows, then prepare for a cold winter.
    • Shopping periodâa week or week-and-a-half in which you can visit classes before registering for themâis a great opportunity; take advantage of it.
    • The workload is intense; think about how you can manage your time efficiently.
    • Though Harvard students have fun, the majority is there for academics, and a crazy social life is not a top priority.
There is a heavy demand for interviews, even though they are not required, so there is no guarantee you will get one. You do not need an appointment for an information session. They are held Monday through Friday.

If you are interested in finding jobs or internships, then stop by the Office of Career Services. At OCS, you can meet with one of the many career counseling experts who will help you search for the perfect job match, help edit your résumés, and even review your interview techniques through video-taped mock interviews. Placing the Harvard name on your résumé certainly gives you an advantage for applying to jobs or internships; however, it's not an automatic acceptance. Harvard is more like a foot in the door, while your success within the University will ultimately determine whether you find the job that you want.

Harvard is tolerant of homosexuality, and the Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian, Transgender and Supporters Allliance (BGLTSA) is constantly rallying to increase tolerance for homosexuality on campus.
Harvard possesses a largely liberal political base, but conservative political groups do make their presence felt. Nearly every student has an informed opinion, and the Institute of Politics provides an excellent forum for discussion and debate of current political topics.
The economic status of Harvard students ranges the entire spectrum. Some students work their way through school, while others never worry about finances. Most students come from upper-middle-class homes.
Harvard is certainly a secular University in which no one religion dominates the University. Christianity and Judaism appear to be the most represented religions. Religiously focused organizations have very little visibility on campus.
Undergraduate minority students have the opportunity to join many clubs and organizations that are focused on improving the status of and fostering community among minority students on campus. Most notable is the Black Students Association (BSA).

Random hookups do happen on the weekends (and weekdays see their share, as well). However, most people are extremely busy and often are so focused on their work that relationships either die out or become serious within a short period of time. This isn't to say you'll never see lasting relationships: Annoyingly cute couples walk the yard surprisingly often. And Harvard Magazineâthe alumni publicationâis always filled with news of Harvard newlyweds.
On the weekends, most people dress up to go out, but during weekday study breaks or hangout sessions, most anything goes (throughout the winter, however, dress code really doesn't matter because everyone is so bundled up to keep warm). In general, Harvard tends to be a bit more formal than average. On the weekend, guys generally sport khakis with a button-down or knit shirt, and a sweater or leather jacket. Girls' dress combinations vary greatly and will often depend on the weather to determine if a skirt or pants is appropriate.

Harvard students are proud, almost snobbishly arrogant, when it comes to their University's reputation, though athletics receive little support, if any. Students wear their colors proudly, especially on the weekend of the Harvard-Yale football game. However, after freshman year, students find themselves wearing less and less apparel with the Harvard name or crest, though the color crimson becomes increasingly present in students' wardrobes. Overall, student spirit brims high when it comes to University reputation.

    • Harvard approaches on-campus living unlike any other college in the nation. After being carefully assigned roommates and dorm accommodations by the University during their first year, students get to choose with whom they'll live for the remaining three. They do this by means of a blocking group, which is composed of up to eight people and can be coed. Every group is then entered into a random housing lottery and assigned to an upperclass house for the next three years, so you will live with your blockmates together in one house. But don't worryâalthough you stay in the same House, you still get assigned a different room each year, and they get better as you go along.
    • Before you get ready to move into your house, you'll spend your first year in one of the freshman dorms. All of the freshman dormsâwith the exception of Apley Court, Greenough, Pennypacker, and Hurlbutâare in Old Harvard Yard. The type of room and number of students each dorm holds varies from year to year, depending on the size of the freshman class and the planning of the Harvard Housing office. All freshman housing is suite-style.
    • There are 13 independent upperclassman houses, and each offers its advantages and disadvantages. The houses are made up of several individual buildings that all feature a variety of room sizes, and the number of floors and bathrooms per room varies greatly, even within the same building. All houses and freshman dorms are coed, and the male-to-female ratio is tweaked to match the overall composition of the University as close as possible.
    • You can search the past inhabitants of every freshman dorm room at www.hcs.harvard.edu/~dorms.

Three Things Every Undergraduate Must Do: According to tradition, there are three things that every undergraduate must do before they graduate from the University. First, every student should run Primal Scream at least once. Primal Scream occurs at midnight before the first day of each exam period. Students streak through the Old Yard as a last hurrah before hitting the books for exams. Secondly, every student is supposed to hook up in the stacks of Widener Library. However, recent technology changes in the stacks have made this goal a bit harder to achieveâall of the aisles now have motion-detecting lights, so you can't hide in the dark anymore. Finally, every student must urinate on the John Harvard Statue found in the Old Yard.
    • According to school lore, the John Harvard Statue, located outside of University Hall, is a statue of the founder of the University. In reality, the story of this statue contains three lies.
    • Lie no. 1: John Harvard didn't found Harvard (the Massachusetts Bay Colony government did).
    • Lie no. 2: Harvard started in 1636, not 1638, as the inscription reads.
    • Lie no. 3: The representation isn't even John Harvard. No one knows what he looked like, since there are no surviving portraits of the man. Daniel Chester French, the sculptor, used a 19th century undergraduate for his model.
